The Samohi Bands

The Santa Monica High School Band was established in 1915, under the direction of Arnold Wagner. The band is one of the oldest high school bands in California, and has a rich heritage due to outstanding instruction, a long history of community support, and its location in proximity to the entertainment industry and premier west coast artistic community.

The band flourished and grew in the 1950's under the direction of Dick Wagnon, and is currently under the direction of Terry Sakow and Mike Corrigan. Mr. Sakow is believed to be the longest serving music teacher ever at the high school - beginning in 1990.

Alumni - History Page Archive

We are (slowly) accumulating materials to post on our History Page. Our current project is collecting, scanning, and posting old concert programs.

If you have old programs that you would like to share - please scan and e-mail them to samohibandwebmaster@yahoo.com.

If you have other materials you think friends and alumni may be interested in - please let us know! Santa Monica has one of the oldest high school bands west of the Rockies. It is great when we can share that history!

Calling all Band and Color Guard parents!!!!

We are looking forward to a new year with the Bands and Color Guard and hoping for continued successes. To accomplish that we need your help in many ways---

Starting in mid August we need help fitting, hemming, mending and ironing Marching Band and Color Guard uniforms as well as concert dresses. To prepare for fittings, we make info cards, write names on hangers, and clean and mop the Color Guard Room.

We also need help in Band merchandise sales--pj's, sweatshirts, hats, etc. during the 4 days of registration and freshman orientation. These sales are vitally important in helping to fund our programs.

In Sept., in preparation for marching season, we need help organizing football uniforms and hats for student pickup prior to the first game and collect post season. We need people to help organize and load the truck with competition uniforms and hats. At football games we need people to unroll carpet on the stadium seats for the students (to keep the uniforms as clean as possible) and roll up after. Post season, we need help preparing uniforms for pickup by the dry cleaner and reorganizing them on their return. During competitions, we need someone to launder the white gloves each week.

All parents can help in merchandise sales throughout the year, fitting, renting and ordering concert dresses, collecting at end of year and laundering. These are just a sampling of some of the many jobs we need help getting accomplished for a successful year for your child in our Bands program. Many hands make for light work as they say! Please help with your time!

Please call or email Pat Mahler to volunteer or for any questions---cpamahler@juno.com

We can't do it without your help!!! Any time you can give will be greatly appreciated!!!
